Mannie Walker Norford, Jr.

Mannie Walker Norford, Jr.Mannie Walker Norford, Jr., 92 died peacefully at home in Rochelle, VA surrounded by family. Mannie was born in Charlottesville, VA on June 10, 1922. He leaves behind his devoted wife of fifty-three years, Margie Root Norford, his son Richard M. Norford and wife Kay of Harrisburg, PA, his daughter Faye Norford, of Durham, N.C., and daughter Penny Norford of Charlottesville, VA; three nephews David Carter from Lexington, KY, Walker P. Norford of Waynesboro, VA, and Harry Norford, Jr. of San Antonio, TX; five grandchildren, Richie, Robbie and Michael Norford, Wendy and Bobby Tonker and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles Norford, Dorothy Norford Carter, Rosser Norford, Orestes Norford all of Charlottesville, VA, Cora Norford Costello of Memphis TN, and Harry Norford, Sr. of Madison County, VA. In addition to family, Mannie leaves behind several lifelong friends Dek and Connie Bowen, Gene and Marilyn Fox, and Robert and Catherine Peters.

Mannie began his career in law enforcement in 1942 as a Charlottesville police officer. During World War II, he served as military police with the U.S. Marine Corps. Following the war, Mannie continued his career in law enforcement protecting the Charlottesville community for over forty years as a patrol officer, a detective, and as Captain of the Charlottesville Police Department. Late in his career, he was elected and served twice as Charlottesville City Sheriff. Appointed to the Virginia Board of Corrections by Governor Wilder, Mannie served on this board as well as the Virginia Association of Former Sheriffs well beyond his retirement in 1984. Other Civic activities that Mannie was involved with were the Police Boys Little League, the creation of the Charlottesville Attention Home, and the Shenandoah Valley Crime Clinic. Mannie received many distinguished service awards throughout his career.

Mannie was much respected and beloved by the officers that served with him. His remarkably sharp mind as well as his countless police stories will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

The family of Mannie Norford wishes to express to each of you, especially the medical and hospice professionals who have cared for him, their heartfelt appreciation for your kindness, compassion, and care throughout his illness.

A graveside service will be held at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery  Map at 2620 Frays Mill Rd, Ruckersville, VA 22968 where he was a member. At 11:00 on Tuesday, October 14, 2014. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.
